Wishard Hospital
Wishard Hospital’s Burn Unit in Indianapolis had been one of the only burn units in the state of Indiana, but was housed in an older building. Wishard decided to build two additional stories, however, it needed a solution to the challenge of fitting complicated program spaces onto an existing two-story, outdated building on a land-locked campus. One of these new floor additions would be dedicated to providing holistic care for patients and their family members.
Cripe Architects + Engineers provided all design services for the fourth floor, 25,500 square foot Wishard Burn Unit and a 25,500 square foot third floor shell space.
The burn unit grew from a 9 bed facility to a 12 bed facility and included a state-of-the-art operating room and a hospice place for patients’ families, in addition to private sleeping rooms and sleeping quarters to reduce infection risks.
The Cripe team worked with Wishard’s talented doctors and nurses to establish the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center as one of only 50 burn centers in the United States recognized by the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association.
