Butler Bowl Turf Replacement
Civil Engineering, Land Surveying
Cripe was selected to provide topographic survey and civil engineering design for the turf replacement and drainage improvement in the Butler Bowl at Butler University, a member of the Big East Conference for Soccer and the Pioneer Football League. The turf field was replaced with Shaw Sports Turf PowerBlade monofilament synthetic turf system and was striped for both football and soccer. The project included a drainage investigation and testing to identify and confirm staff reported ponding issues in select areas of the turf area. The infiltration tests were performed prior to demolition to identify problem areas.
After the existing turf was removed, infiltration testing was repeated to determine if the issue was a surface or subgrade drainage issue. The tests indicated the ponding areas were a result of the turf being clogged due to sediment, grass and leaves in areas adjacent to the earth embankment areas that were eroding. The design solution included installation of a stone french drain and perforated underdrain system to intercept the storm water runoff travelling down the slope prior to the field. The eroded slopes were re-established and stabilized using a permanent turf reinforcement mat and seeding.
