Butler University Irvington House
Civil Engineering, Land Surveying
The project included the surveying and civil engineering design of a new student housing project for American Campus Communities on the campus of Butler University. The new 647-bed residence features suite-style residential units with state-of-the-art amenities including recreation center and social lounge and outdoor study lounges surrounded by open lawn space, a courtyard, and fire pit.The residential hall provides a beautiful transition from central campus to the expanding south campus. In addition to the building, the project included student gathering spaces and new sidewalks and a multi-use path to improved pedestrian and bicycle connectivity within the campus, to south campus, and from academic buildings to amenities north including Clowe’s Hall, the parking garage, restaurants, and Hinkle Fieldhouse.
A particular challenge associated with the development of this project included coordination of design with respect to ongoing campus activities, re-utilization of limestone block and decorative limestone elements in adjacent projects from both a sustainability best practices and preservation of historical material context, preservation of heritage and campus-sensitive trees, and planning for future development immediately north and east of the project site. LEED certification is currently in progress for this project.
